Gold medal in the bag for Percy and Mitchell

Olympic Classes Europeans - Team GBR - Gold medal in the bag for Percy and Mitchell
VARBERG, SWEDEN-(11-8-2005) Today Iain Percy and Steve Mitchell walked away from the Star European Championships in Varberg, Sweden, with a gold medal.  After scoring a sixth place finish today, the team are guaranteed a win. The pair have sailed consistently well at this event and as a result they will not have to sail in the final race of the series.  Iain Percy, the newly crowned Star European Champion, commented, “We have had a quiet year and only sailed in a few events, so it was great to get back in the Star.  Our results at the Europeans have been encouraging and we are pleased with the outcome.  I was eager to get out on the water and thoroughly enjoyed the conditions.  We have really relished every moment of sailing at this event.”

Ben Ainslie scored another first place finish.  Ainslie has been dominating the Finn European Championships in Kalmar, Sweden.  With two days of racing to go, Anislie will be hoping for a top three finish.

Race five at Tornado European Championships, Vastervik, Sweden, got started in eight knots of breeze and ended in barely three knots.  Sailors who started towards the back of the pack had the advantage when in the middle of the race the wind became almost non existent.  Boats at the back slowly gained ground and many finished towards the top of the fleet.  While the Austrian team of Hagara and Steinacher were the last to cross the starting line after turning circles for fouling another boat, they were also the first over the finish line showing just how difficult today’s race was.  Andrew Walsh and Ed Barney, the highest placed British sailors, took a ninth place, moving them into twentieth overall and sixteenth in the European fleet.

Going into the penultimate day of the Laser European Championships, Paul Goodison was in silver medal position and only two points away from leading the fleet.  Results for today’s racing to follow in an update late tonight.

Two more races were completed at the Laser Radial Europeans.  Results to follow later this evening.

The 49er European Championships continued today.  Results currently unavailable but will follow later this evening.
